In what appears to be an indication of rising unemployment, three-quarters of women, accounting for almost 75 per cent, and 20 per cent of men aged 15 to 49 years were not employed in the district during the past one year, a national survey has revealed.
The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), conducted by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, through the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, has also indicated that 5 per cent of women and 18 per cent of men were engaged in an agricultural occupation while 19 per cent of women and 59 per cent of men were employed in a non-agricultural occupation.
The figures were arrived at on the basis of the study conducted for 12 months preceding the survey.
The current survey, fifth in the NFHS series, which provides information on population, health and nutrition for India and each state and Union Territory, with district-level estimates for many important indicators, a copy of which is with The Tribune, showed that more than three-fourths (78 per cent) of households in the district live in a pucca (concrete) house and all households have electricity supply.
It also revealed that 98 per cent of households have basic drinking water service, and almost all (99 per cent) households use an improved source of drinking water, but only 67 per cent have water piped into their dwelling, yard, or plot.
The urban households (74 per cent) were more likely than rural households (63 per cent) to have water piped into their dwelling, yard, or plot.
The study further elaborated that 44 per cent of households use an appropriate treatment method to make drinking water potable, mostly by using an electronic purifier.
Over three-fourth of households (77 per cent) in the district use clean fuel for cooking.
According to the survey report, just over 1 per cent (1.2 per cent) of the household population has any disability. The most prominent type of disability was locomotor, which was suffered by 0.5 per cent persons.
However, 2 per cent men were double in number than 1 per cent women to have any disability.
Finding that the proportion of household members, who have any disability, rises with increasing age, the survey reported that almost 2 per cent of the household members aged 35 to 69 years and 3 per cent aged 70 years and above were reported to have disability, compared with about 1 per cent of household members in the younger age groups.

The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling English daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
